Everybody’s Medicine
Once most people learn about naturopathic medicine, they typically realize this is the kind of medicine they have been looking for. The combination of the scientific knowledge of conventional medicine with the wisdom of traditional and natural therapies creates a system of medicine that is effective and accessible to all. Naturopathic medicine can treat and support a wide variety of health conditions.
Programs We Offer
Women's Healthcare
Women undergo significant changes before and after menopause. For some women these hormonal shifts begin in their early forties and begin as menstrual irregularities and shifts in energy and moods. Dr. Knorr supports women through these changes by measuring hormonal function along with an overall health assessment. This includes a cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and bone health assessment.
He then creates an individualized treatment plan so women can transition through these years with grace and assurance. Ovarian hormonal function, adrenal, and thyroid function are often assessed and then balanced (see Hormonal Balancing Section below). Many women feel their energy renewed and feel better than they have in years.
For gynecological assessment and disorders Dr. Knorr likes to refer women to Dr. Leslie Peterson, ND at Full Circle Care.

Gastrointestinal Health
Dr. Knorr specializes in the treatment of digestive disorders. Many people are surprised to learn that the gastrointestinal tract holds 2 to 3 pounds of bacteria and other flora, which when in balance, contributes to one’s overall health. When out-of-balance, however, it can become a significant burden and tax the immune system. Imbalance and overgrowth of certain bacteria and yeast is called dysbiosis. Up to sixty percent of the immune system surrounds the gastrointestinal system which is taxed by dysbiotic flora. In addition, dysbiosis can cause chronic inflammation at the level of the gut wall and can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome. This syndrome causes a passage of antigenic factors within the gut to have a reaction with the immune system that surround the digestive tract.
Food allergies also play an essential role in digestive system dysfunction. They are often present and not diagnosed and can be the cause of inflammation, irritation, gas, bloating and present a burden to the digestive system. Food allergies can be a significant contributing factor to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, reflux, and constipation. They can also play a central role in acne, eczema, attention deficit disorder, and migraines. Assessment of gastrointestinal dysbiosis is done via a stool sample and a food allergy assessment is done either via a blood draw or a structured elimination and reintroduction of allergenic foods. These are some fundamental testing methods to assess digestive health.

Are your Hormones Balanced?
My goal is to help you feel better, resolve your symptoms, and to understand your underlying hormonal imbalances. I have years of experience assessing hormonal function. Hormones can be assessed via blood evaluation, salivary testing, urine testing, and symptom surveys.
Hormones are chemical messengers in the body which exert a strong influence upon target tissues and organs. They influence one another and can be compared to the many musical instruments that make up a symphony. When all the musicians are playing their instruments harmoniously then the resulting music is beautiful. When this is not the case, it results in disharmony and dis-ease.
The primary hormones that I assess are: thyroid, adrenal (cortisol-dhea), pancreatic (insulin-glucose), ovarian (estrogen-progesterone), testicular (testosterone) and occasionally pituitary (LH-FSH).
These hormones strongly affect energy levels, endurance, inflammation, neurotransmitters, brain function, mood, sleep, libido, heart function, digestion, bone, and musculoskeletal health. The question is - what do they not affect? Because of their far reaching influence is why an assessment of their function is so fundamental to health.
Even slight variations of hormonal function can cause symptoms. There is often a functional imbalance that needs to be assessed and treated. Many patients do not have a clear diagnosis of a disease process. My patients often comment to me about their thyroid function: “Oh, my other doctor said I was on the low side, but did not recommend treatment.” This where I like to take action and treat, because my patients will feel better!
Another consideration is: “What affects hormonal metabolism?” Here is a short list: age, lifestyle, exercise (or lack thereof), menopause, andropause, diet, nutrition, sleep, genetics, life stressors (a huge effect), mental health, trauma, allergies, and toxins (heavy metals, chemicals).
The Primary Hormones:
The thyroid gland is called the “Shield gland” in German. It determines your basal metabolic rate. The analogy that I use is that the basal metabolic rate is like the rotations-per-minute of a manual car. In a hypothyroid condition the rotations-per-minute are too slow. Thyroid affects your basal metabolic rate which affects every cell in your body. It affects all these systems directly: cardiac health, mental health, the nervous system, musculoskeletal health, digestive health, and other hormones. Various nutrient deficiencies, hormones, and toxins influence thyroid function. Their analysis is part of the greater thyroid functional assessment. Treatments include herbs, nutrients, glandular extracts, and prescription medication.
The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and help people successful deal with the stressors in their life. The term “adrenal fatigue” is defined as of deficient adrenal function. This is often due to chronic life stressors. When patients present with the symptom of fatigue I am thinking: “Is the thyroid gland or the adrenal gland functioning deficiently?” Both of these glands secrete hormones that significantly contribute to energy production and a sense of well being.
Adrenal function can easily be assessed via saliva testing. Four salivary cortisol samples are measured along with dhea. I most commonly see deficient function and occasionally excess cortisol secretion. Cortisol plays an essential role in blood sugar regulation and inflammation. For a more complete discussion of the adrenal glands, please see this article on our blog.
The pancreas secretes insulin which in turn controls blood sugar levels. The liver and adrenal cortisol also play important roles in blood sugar regulation. Elevated blood sugar is a problem for the majority of people in the United States. Most people are unaware of this and if they are aware, do not really know what to do about it. Elevated blood sugar levels are defined as hyperglycemia, metabolic syndrome, and pre-diabetes. Hypoglycemia is defined as low blood sugar levels. Either way, abnormal regulation of blood sugar is quite problematic and can have far reaching effects. This includes systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and mental emotional function.
Food choices, exercise, and lifestyle choices have a profound effect upon blood sugar regulation. Other players include adrenal and liver function, and toxin levels. Labs such as Hemoglobin A1C, fasting insulin, and fasting glucose need to be evaluated. For starters, sugar needs to be eliminated from the diet. There are numerous other dietary strategies. The solution calls for extensive education, lifestyle shifts, awareness, and exercise. I have seen significant weight loss, decreased inflammation, and increased energy levels when all systems are functioning optimally.
Sex hormones, namely endocrine output of the ovaries and the testicles, have a foundational effect upon all systems. For both sexes these hormones have a strong impact upon mood and motivation. The reaction to stress encountered in life is moderated by these hormones. They affect the skin, muscle, bone, heart, brain and sexual health dramatically.
I have helped many pre-menopausal and post menopausal women restore their hormonal balance. PMS, dysmenorrhea, and migraines respond to hormonal therapy. Bio-identical hormone therapy helps women transition through peri-menopause. Bio-identical hormones help women age more gracefully once they have reached menopause. They can help women with insomnia, low libido, hot flashes, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Bio-identical hormones are an integral part of the treatment protocol for osteoporosis and dementia prevention. I work with conservative doses, balance the estrogen with progesterone, and always check blood levels.
Men who have low testosterone levels will not be on their game. Testosterone will affect their libido and many other aspects of their health. Testosterone can significantly affect mood, physical endurance, blood sugar regulation, depression, anxiety, and stress adaptation. I use testosterone to treat osteopenia and osteoporosis for men and women. I often see low adrenal function along with low testosterone levels in men. I work to support testosterone production and prescribe testosterone to treat these symptoms.
In supporting hormonal function for women and men I consider a spectrum of naturopathic therapies. I work to understand the big picture of how the various hormones may be affecting one another. Therapies include: glandular extracts, herbal medicines, nutritional therapy, lifestyle recommendations, and prescriptions of hormones.

Detoxification Programs
Detoxification therapy is invaluable in naturopathic medical practice. The important organs of detoxification, the liver, the lymphatic system, and the gastrointestinal tract, are often in need of supportive therapy. The liver performs over 500 metabolic reactions and determines the quality of the blood which determines the health of all tissues and systems. This is why the liver is often the focus of therapy. The gastrointestinal tract also needs to be carefully evaluated as 25% percent of detoxification takes place here.
A variety of programs are available. We often use specific medical products to promote liver, digestive, lymphatic, and kidney detoxification. We offer a 7-day program which can easily be expanded to a 14 or 21-day program. Spring and fall are ideal times for detoxification.
Patients with the following conditions have benefited from detoxification: allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, eczema and other skin conditions, fatigue, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal conditions, heavy metal toxicity (such as mercury), hypertension, immune deficiency, tinnitus and vertigo to name a few. Detoxification can also aid in weight loss and is often a starting point for many naturopathic therapies and programs.

Pediatric Health Care
Children consistently respond well to the therapeutics of natural medicine. Natural medicines are often gentle and specific enough to stimulate a healing response; if needed antibiotics can be prescribed. We like to educate parents and families about their healthy choices and home remedies so that they become an integral part of their children’s healthcare. We have seen that when children are treated with respect and dignity, they are more cooperative and intrigued by their medical care. Herbal medicine and homeopathic medicine tend to be our first line of care for infants and children. See natural medicine and therapies.

GI Map Test
What is going on in the gastrointestinal tract? This is the test that helps answer that question.
This innovative test identifies over 60 different organisms in the colon that may be problematic and beneficial. It is based on PCR testing. Specifically, it identifies the RNA and DNA signature of organisms in the GI tract. I have diagnosed many cases of guardia, heliobacter pylori, candida, and protozoal colonization with this test. Conventional stool test only look for half a dozen pathogens. The GI Map casts out a wide net and looks at many organisms (more than 60) to help understand what may be the problematic organisms.
Digestive function is also assessed. This includes the GI immune system response, and inflammation. Zonulin, a marker for leaky gut, can also be included. This test provides me with invaluable information to effectively treat the the patient.
